NEWS FROM THE FARM - Liz Brunskill, Farncombe Conservation Farm & Camping, Lambourn
Our traditional Hereford cows and calves are happy enjoying the grass which is growing at last. We have 6 calves now with 2 more cows to calve mid June, hopefully in the sun not the rain! Vampire our bull is really enjoying being out having spent part of the winter in his pen. We had excitement this week when a glider landed in the field with the cattle but they didn’t seem to mind even when another aircraft came to tow it up and away.
I've never seen so many cowslips and the wild flowers we planted are just showing (we'll keep the cattle away from the wild flower chalk downland until early July). Suddenly all the birds have arrived - I think they have been hiding from the wet windy weather. We have 2 lapwings nesting and the Little Owl is happy in her owl box and the male is flying around getting food for her.
The next Hereford has been sent to Laverstoke Park for preparation and will be ready for delivery or collection from Farncombe on Fri 25 May. Always exciting as we are not quite sure how many joints we will get and what size! It’s really great that orders have just started coming in but we are happy to sell meat anytime. Please contact 01488 71833 or farncombe.farm@virgin.net if the link to this price list doesn't work. Date for the diary: we will be attending the East Garston food festival and produce show on Sat 21 July so please come along and taste our meat!
