...long term interest!

We received the following kind email .....

"Having been born in Hungerford in 1921 and now residing in South Africa it was fantastic to see my old birth place. My father was Hungerford Laundry manager. Serving 40 years and retired in ill health in '52 and settled in S A untill he passed away in 1957.I left Hungerford joining the RAF in'40. Brother Cyril was killed in war and is mentioned on the War memorial and in St Lawrence Church.
Have revisited town several times whilst on U K visits. Still a beautiful town and wonderful memories as a boy on the common. Congratulations on the website." Reg Mayne

This was followed by more information ....

"The early forties is a long time ago - I am 91 next month. I doubt if any friends or people that will remember us are still around but should any one come to light I would love to correspond or give memories of the old days. Are any of the older families children still living . In my day Mills was the butcher and Brooks was the shoemaker - Freddie Barnard the fishmonger. Audsley was our neighbour when living at "Corner Ways" in upper Priory Road. Jessett, living near the Common gate, was the last contact I had when we met in Johannesburg many years ago. There was a Bill Chant that worked for my father who may have children still alive. Inspector Rodgers was the Police chief just to mention a few."

If anyone would like to email Reg, please contact the webmaster.

As part of the celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen,
Hungerford Town Council is introducing the Award of Freedom of the Town.
The Award is intended to promote good citizenship by recognising as role models those in our midst who by their actions and demeanour have demonstrated exceptionally loyal  service to the benefit of the town.
Cllr Martin Crane, Mayor, says  “Each year we shall consider awarding this Freedom to those, who in the opinion of our citizens have made a significant contribution to the well-being of Hungerford.
Our Town is blessed with many who through their selfless actions have given so much to our community and by identifying a few with this award, we also giving our thanks to the many who volunteer to the huge benefit of the whole Town”
Nominations for this year’s awards should be received by the Town Clerk no later than 2 March. These can be made by using a form available from the Council Office or downloaded here or by your preferred means of communication giving the name of the individual and some background information. This will be judged by a small panel comprising of the Town Clerk, Mayor and six non-councillors who have themselves provided longstanding service to the Town. Their decision will be presented to the Full Council for ratification. The Awards will be announced at the Town’s Public Meeting on Thursday 15 March.

Christmas Crime Prevention Advice

Vehicles:
•Ensure all windows and doors are secured when not in use
•Never leave keys in the ignition and the car unattended even for a few seconds
•Keep all presents and other shopping out of sight. Never leave them on the passenger seat or foot well of the vehicle.
•Do not leave valuables such as mobile phones, laptops or satellite navigation systems in the vehicle, take them with you.

Your Home:
•Make sure all doors and windows are kept locked, even if only popping out for a few minutes.
•Do not leave presents on display in the house or under the tree until the last minute.
•Remember to turn your Christmas lights off at night or before you go out as they could be a fire hazard.
•If you are going away over the festive season ask a neighbour or friend to check your house regularly and leave them a contact number in case of emergencies.

After Christmas:
•Dispose of any empty packaging carefully as it can be an advertisement for thieves.

The role of the NAG ?

Hungerford and Inkpen have joined together as neighbouring areas to form a Neighbourhood Action Group that will address some of the local issues and concerns that communities such as ours have these days – and for which it is sometimes unclear about where or how to bring them to the attention of the right people or official agencies to have action taken.

Organised initially by our local Police, the NAG (as it’s known) now has a volunteer membership drawn from our local Council, the Chamber of Commerce, West Berkshire Council, the Police, local schools, youth workers, housing agencies who together span all kinds of interests and age ranges.

With the main focus of activity being on problems identified as being "quality of life" issues, the role of the Nag is to listen to the voice of everyone in the community, find a consensus of what the current priorities are felt to be – and draw up a series of Action Plans to raise the profile of these issues so that we can bring them to the attention of the right people or the right agencies, to try and find solutions or improvements suitable to our own local resources and needs.

The NAG has already moved on to identifying some problem issues in the area – three public meetings so far have identified issues concerning speeding cars, inconsiderate parking, slow police response times, unruly children, difficulty in contacting the police, anti-social behaviour and underage drinking.

We have heard from young people too – who raised issues about the absence of facilities for young people in the town.

Members of the community have to accept that they themselves must take a lot of the responsibility for issues of safety and behaviour and good order. It’s not just a question of leaving everything to the Police – but the NAG will listen – and then provide a voice to tell the right people about what we all feel are the current priorities.

** REGISTRATION   IS  YOUR  FIRST  PRIORITY ** Housing

As you are already aware a Housing Need Survey of Hungerford was conducted by Arlene Kersley the Rural Housing Enabler for Berkshire at the Community Council for Berkshire, in autumn 2006.  The survey results identified that there is considerable need for affordable housing for people with a local connection in Hungerford.

Hungerford Town Council feels it is important to secure some affordable housing for local people. Such housing can only be developed on a rural exception site, where the housing is restricted for local people and must remain affordable in perpetuity. Hungerford Town Council is working with Testway Housing Association to identify possible sites for rural exception development.

However, we cannot stress enough,  that if you or your family members are in need of affordable housing you must be registered on the West Berkshire Common Housing Register to be eligible.  Anyone can register, although allocations will be based on local connection and level of need. Housing on such a site will be available to rent. To register contact West Berkshire District Council on 01635 42400 or visit their website www.westberks.gov.uk   For further information contact Arlene Kersley on 0118 961 2000. Issued by Hungerford  Town Council with thanks to Arlene Kersley

FREE PARKING!
A Chamber of Commerce scheme where retailers will give a refund of the parking charge (all Hungerford car parking) against a minimum spend in participating shops. The parking machines will issue receipts with the ticket, the customer leaves the ticket in their car and takes the receipt with them. If they then spend £5 in a participating shop they get a one hour, 50p, refund. If they spend £10 they receive a two hour, 90p, refund.

Participating shops are identified (currently around 30) and the scheme is now operational.
